Aulani Character Breakfast – Makahiki

On our last day at Aulani we had character breakfast at Makahiki restaurant, we actually did not have any reservations but since it was very early in the morning, they were able to put us on the waitlist and got sat down within 15 minutes.

We got served the most delicious malasadas, which I like to describe them as typical Hawaiian sugar “donuts.” We ate malasadas in different places but Aulani’s were, hands down, the best ones.

Malasadas

The restaurant had a live local performer singing Hawaiian songs and we got visited by Stitch and Chip and Dale. There’s a separate are where you go and take pictures with other charterers like Mickey, Minnie and Goofy.

Since Aulani is NOT all-inclusive, we tried to keep the food spending reasonable. During our 4-day stay, we had breakfast mostly at “Off the Hook.” We ordered two adult plates and it was more than enough food for our family of 4 (our twins were 10yo). They serve your typical Mickey waffles, eggs, etc

As for lunch, we ate at Ulu’s Cafe, which is located right next to the Rainbow Reef. They have quick cold meals but also a buffet like station with poke bowls, pizzas, etc. Pool service was very good as well, I loved their meat-lovers pizza. We also really liked the coconut fried shrimp from Mama’s Snack Stop, which is located by the pool area.

TIP: if your family likes soft-drinks, Ulu’s Cafe sells reusable cups for $35 (Summer 2024) and you can refill as many times as you want during your entire stay!

My kids were obsessed with Mickey’s snow cones and Dole’s pineapple ice-cream and sincerely, I think they are part of the experience.

Side note: Right across of the hotel, there’s a Starbucks, a supermarket with plenty of hot food options and an American food restaurant. You literally cross the street to a little shopping plaza with boutiques, souvenir shops, etc
